Seamus meeting the finished version of his “Tank on Duty” portrait. From Seamus to “Tank on Duty”: Designing a Custom Tortoise Rug
Custom Tortoise Rug Story
Seamus is a Sulcata tortoise with a big presence, strong opinions, and a backyard routine all his own. When we designed his custom tortoise rug, the goal was not simply to reproduce his photo. We wanted the finished piece to feel like the Seamus his owner already knew.
That idea became “Tank on Duty”—a work-zone-inspired design built around his photo, his American flag, and a simple checklist: Eat. Patrol. Chill.
Why “Tank on Duty” Fit Seamus
Seamus can be doing his own thing one moment and taking a sudden interest in something in the yard the next. Combined with his size, the “heavy equipment” joke felt less invented than observed.
Even “Patrol” fits a little too well on days when Seamus decides something in the yard has become his business.

Designing From the Original Photo
The American flag was already in his original photo. We did not add it later to force a theme.
Instead, we kept that detail and built outward from Seamus himself. “Tank on Duty” became the headline, supported by construction-style warning graphics and the Eat / Patrol / Chill checklist.
For a custom Sulcata tortoise rug, the shell already brings plenty of pattern and texture. Keeping the surrounding graphics bold and simple helped the design stay playful without competing with Seamus’s face and shell.

The One That Felt Most Like Seamus
We shared several design directions with Seamus’s owner, but the favorite was clear:
“The ‘tank on duty’ one is my favorite.”
That response told us the concept was working. A personalized pet rug is not finished simply because the animal is recognizable. It should also feel right to the person who knows that pet beyond the photograph.

From Artwork to Custom Tortoise Rug
Turning the artwork into a custom tortoise rug from a photo meant deciding which details needed to stay strongest once the image moved from screen to textile.
Seamus’s face and shell pattern remained the visual anchor, while the larger warning graphics were kept easy to read.
The finished rug is produced locally in California. Once the final artwork is approved, it ships within 72 hours.

More Than a Copy of the Photo
Seamus’s rug started with a real photograph, but the final design worked because it did not stop there. The original details stayed recognizable; his personality gave them direction.
That is what makes a good custom tortoise rug feel personal. It should look like the pet, but ideally it should also make the person who knows them best say:
“Yep. That’s them.”
FAQ
Can you make a custom tortoise rug from a photo?
Yes. A clear photo can be the starting point for a custom tortoise rug. We focus on recognizable details such as the face, shell pattern, body shape, and features that belong to the original image.
Can you make custom rugs for reptiles and unusual pets?
Yes. Tortoises, axolotls, lizards, birds, and other less-common pets can all work as custom pet rug subjects. Some designs stay close to the portrait; others leave more room for personality.
