From Aquarium Photo to Custom Goldfish Rug: Peaches & Clementine’s Story
Some pet photos are memorable because of the pet. Others capture an entire little world.
When we first saw Peaches and Clementine in their aquarium, both were true. The two Oranda goldfish immediately stood out, but so did the setting around them: the rippling water surface, rising bubbles, aquatic plants and softly colored stones.
That environment became an important part of the idea for their custom goldfish rug. Rather than simply isolating the fish and placing them on a decorative background, we wanted the finished piece to still feel like their aquarium.
The Aquarium Detail We Wanted to Keep
One of our favorite details in the first reference photo was easy to overlook: the waterline at the top of the tank.
The reflections and ripples immediately give the image depth. They tell your eye that you are looking into an aquarium rather than simply looking at two fish against a blue background.
For the artwork, we didn’t reproduce every reflection literally. The original water surface contained glass reflections, equipment and many tiny highlights that would have made the composition unnecessarily busy.
Instead, those details were translated into a softer watercolor waterline, with loose blue-green ripples and scattered bubbles.
The result keeps the feeling of the real aquarium while giving the fish more room to stand out.
A Better Photo, Without Losing the Original Scene
After seeing the first design direction, Peaches & Clementine’s owner sent another photo with a clearer view of both fish.
It was a better portrait reference, especially for their faces, head growth, coloring and fins. But the newer image didn’t include the same visible waterline that gave the first photo so much atmosphere.
So we kept the aquarium composition we had already built and changed what actually needed changing: the fish portraits.
The fish changed. The aquarium atmosphere didn’t.
The clearer reference helped us refine Peaches and Clementine while preserving the watercolor plants, stones, bubbles and rippling surface inspired by the original tank.

Turning the Artwork Into a 3 × 3 ft Custom Goldfish Rug
Once the portraits and aquarium composition were approved, the artwork was prepared as a 3 × 3 ft custom fish rug.
That size gave both fish enough visual space to remain recognizable while still leaving room for the environment around them. The plants frame the sides, stones anchor the bottom, and the pale waterline closes the composition at the top.
Fine watercolor texture also had to be balanced with the physical rug surface. Tiny splashes, plant details and reflections were kept where they added character and simplified where they would create unnecessary visual noise.
The finished rug was made in California and moved into production after the design was approved. Our custom rugs ship within 72 hours after final design approval.
From Digital Artwork to the Finished Rug
Putting the digital artwork next to the finished rug shows why those small decisions mattered.
The watercolor texture became softer on the textile surface, but the main structure stayed intact: the blue water above, plants along the sides, stones below and Peaches and Clementine at the center.
Most importantly, it still feels connected to the aquarium where the idea began.

Sometimes the better design comes from combining what several photos do best: a clearer portrait from one image, the atmosphere from another, and just enough editing to make everything feel like it always belonged together.

Yes. Using more than one photo can actually be helpful. One image might show your goldfish more clearly, while another captures the aquarium, water surface, plants, or other details you want to keep. We can use the strongest elements from different references to create one cohesive custom goldfish rug.
Can you include my fish tank or aquarium background in the rug design?
Absolutely. Your rug doesn’t have to be only a cutout portrait of your fish. Meaningful aquarium details—such as the waterline, bubbles, aquatic plants, stones, or overall color palette—can be simplified and incorporated into the artwork. For Peaches & Clementine’s rug, we kept the feeling of the original aquarium even after switching to a clearer photo of the fish.
