Seymour’s Custom Squirrel Rug: Turning a Bedtime Routine Into a Cozy Keepsake
Spend a little time watching Seymour and you quickly realize that what makes him memorable is not simply the fact that he is a squirrel. It is the little world around him: soft blankets, stuffed animals, sleepy expressions and a bedtime routine that has become part of his personality online.
When we started designing Seymour’s custom squirrel rug, the source photo itself was surprisingly simple. But that became part of what made this project interesting.
The photo showed us what Seymour looked like. His everyday life showed us what the rug should feel like.

The Photo Was Simple. The Story Didn’t Have to Be.
The original photo shows Seymour sitting upright on a bright blue blanket, his fluffy tail rising behind him. It is a strong reference image: his face is clear, his body shape is easy to read, and his natural gray-brown coloring is visible without obstruction.
What we did not want to do was let the large blue background define the finished rug.
Instead of reproducing the photograph exactly, we kept Seymour as the visual anchor and looked beyond the source image for the rest of the design. His familiar bedtime moments gave this custom squirrel rug from a photo a much more personal direction.
Building Seymour’s Bedtime World
The answer was already in Seymour’s videos: layered blankets, plush companions, warm lighting and the very serious business of getting comfortable before bed.
We rebuilt the surroundings around those details. The electric blue blanket gave way to warm amber tones, soft bedding and stuffed friends. A large serif “Seymour” gives the composition a storybook-cover feeling, while small stars, hearts and hand-drawn details keep it from becoming too polished.
Under his name sits “little dreams, big heart.” In the lower corner, “Goodnight, forest friend” reads like a tiny note left beside the bed.
Seymour himself, however, stays real. We did not need to turn him into a cartoon to create a storybook mood. That feeling comes from the color, setting and typography surrounding him.
From a Pet Photo to a 2 × 3 ft Custom Squirrel Rug
The finished piece was produced as a 2 × 3 ft personalized squirrel rug. That size keeps Seymour large enough to remain the clear focal point while still leaving room for the blankets, typography and small narrative details around him.
After the final artwork was approved, the rug moved into local production in California and was prepared to ship within 72 hours.
This is also where a design has to work beyond the screen. Fine decorative ideas need to remain readable on a real textile surface, while Seymour’s face, tail and silhouette still need to be recognizable from across the room.
Seymour Meets His Rug
The most satisfying part came afterward: the finished rug entered the same cozy everyday world that inspired it.
Seymour’s account later shared the rug in real life, so the piece was no longer just a design file or product photo. It was back among the blankets, soft spaces and familiar routines that helped shape the idea in the first place.

Can you make a custom rug for a squirrel or another unusual pet?
Yes. A custom exotic pet rug does not have to be limited to cats and dogs. Squirrels, rabbits, birds, reptiles and other pets can all work well. A clear photo and recognizable features are much more important than the species.
Do you always keep the original photo background?
No. Sometimes the setting is an important part of the photo and deserves to stay. Other times, like Seymour’s bright blue blanket, the pet is worth keeping while the surrounding world can be redesigned around its personality and story.
