More Than a Single Pet Portrait
Wheeks & Whiskers is home to a much larger cavy family. Their posts are filled with time outdoors, shared snacks, group photos, and quieter moments centered on just one or two familiar faces.
That everyday rhythm is what gives this story its warmth. Rather than centering on one carefully staged portrait, their posts show the guinea pigs as part of a lively community, with familiar faces and everyday routines appearing again and again.
This custom rug began with one small moment from that larger world: a photograph of two guinea pigs sitting together.
THE PHOTO
The Photo That Became the Rug
Out of that larger guinea pig family, this project focused on two. The reference photo showed them sitting close together with both faces clearly visible.
Because both guinea pigs were already in the same photograph, there was no need to combine separate images or create a different scene.
The original photo gave us a clear starting point. Their pose, expressions, and the way they sat together could stay recognizable without changing the moment that made the photo special.
THE DESIGN
From the Photo to the Final Design
The artwork kept the two guinea pigs in their original positions. Their markings and face shapes remained distinct, while the outer silhouette connected them into one piece.
Instead of placing the portrait inside a standard rectangle, the outline followed the pair as a single composition. Their original pose naturally became the shape of the finished custom-shaped rug.
The artwork was shared for review before production so the portrait and connected outline could be checked. After approval, the rug was produced in California.

Once the rug arrived, the two guinea pigs were photographed exploring it. The finished rug was no longer only a design on a screen;it was back in the cavy space that inspired it.

The Cavy Cottage Question
When the rug arrived, its new home became the next question: should it stay in the cavy cottage, or should it come inside the house?
“I feel like this should decorate the cavy cottage but I selfishly want it in the house 😂”
The comment captures exactly where the finished rug belonged: somewhere between the guinea pigs’ own space and the home shared with the people who care for them.
