This project began with one simple goal: to create a portrait that looked unmistakably like Iris rather than a generic illustration of a sparrow.
Every design decision was made to preserve the little details her family recognizes instantly.
The Bird Her Family Knows
Iris may be small, but her place in the family is not. The care visible in that video made us want to create something centered entirely on her, not simply on her species or rescue story, but on the bird her family knows.
After we reached out, her family shared several photographs and reviewed different design directions with us. They ultimately selected a clear side-profile portrait that captured Irisβs rounded chest, layered feather markings, and familiar expression. The unobstructed silhouette also gave us a strong foundation for the custom-shaped design.
From Reference Photo to Custom Bird Rug Design
Working from the selected portrait, we removed the indoor background and the object beneath Irisβs feet. This allowed Iris to occupy more of the available rug area while keeping the composition focused on her posture, feather markings, and expression.
We then developed a smooth contour around her body and tail rather than placing the portrait inside a standard rectangle. This reduced unused background space and allowed the rug to follow Irisβs compact silhouette.

The finished rug keeps Iris at the center of the composition, without added text, decorative motifs, or an artificial setting. This restrained approach was intentional: her feather pattern, posture, and expression already gave the piece a distinct visual identity.
At rug scale, the enlarged portrait makes the smaller details of the original photograph easier to appreciate, while the custom outline makes Iris immediately recognizable. The result is both a personal piece for the home and a portrait of the rescued sparrow who slowly became part of the family.
