Instead of asking for a traditional rectangular rug, the owner shared a simple suggestion from the very beginning:
"Maybe a circle rug with Nugget in a ball like this."
Rather than choosing Nugget's clearest portrait, the owner intentionally selected the pose that best reflected his personality. That decision shaped every step of the design process.
The design process
From Photo to Design
One of the most important decisions we made was to prioritize Nugget himself rather than the original photograph.
The reference image included a hand holding Nugget as well as the surrounding environment. While these elements helped create the original photo, they were not what made the image memorable. The owner's attention was always on Nugget's perfectly rounded silhouette.
Instead of reproducing the complete scene, we carefully removed every unnecessary element and designed the rug around Nugget's natural outline. The custom die cut follows the contour of his body instead of forcing the design into a standard rectangle.
This approach allows the finished rug to feel less like a printed photograph and more like Nugget himself resting on the floor. It also creates a cleaner composition that works naturally as both home dΓ©cor and a functional rug.
The illustration
Preserving Nugget's Character
When people recognize their pets, they rarely focus on perfect symmetry or photographic accuracy. Recognition comes from familiar details.
Throughout the illustration process, we carefully preserved Nugget's relaxed expression, tiny ears, soft whiskers, pink nose, and rounded paws. We also maintained the subtle transitions between the cream and gray fur, ensuring the illustration reflected the original appearance without becoming overly stylized.
Rather than exaggerating features for a cartoon effect, we chose to preserve the proportions that made Nugget feel authentic.
Before production
Choosing the Final Design
Before production, we prepared several design directions for comparison.
Among the options, the owner immediately chose the clean white circular version.
"I like the circle white one."
This feedback confirmed that the original concept remained the strongest direction. Sometimes the simplest solution preserves the personality of a pet better than adding decorative backgrounds or graphic elements.
From artwork to home
The Finished Rug
Once production was complete, the finished rug closely reflected the approved artwork.
After receiving the rug, the owner shared:
Soon afterward, Nugget's custom rug appeared on Instagram together with a thoughtful unboxing video, allowing followers to see how accurately the design translated from screen to fabric.
For us, this stage is one of the most meaningful parts of every custom project. The design no longer exists only as artwork. It becomes part of a home and part of everyday life.
